Liebe Perla

Perla Ovitz is an 80-year-old Auschwitz survivor and a former member of a Jewish family musical troupe of little people from Transylvania. Now living in Israel, Ovitz and her family survived Auschwitz only because Josef Mengele, the Nazi "Angel of Death," chose to keep them alive for his "experiments." In this German documentary, Perla asks Hannalore Witkofski, a disability advocate researching the treatment of little people during the Holocaust, to find a lost film about Ovitz's family made by Mengele in 1944. Witkofski takes on the search, and the documentary follows her travels across Germany, through Poland, and finally to visit Perla in Israel. Lieba Perla (Dear Perla) charts the relationship between the two women while examining their intricacies of their different feelings surrounding disability and the Holocaust. See "Special Showings" for details.
