Korean director Bong Joon-ho's first feature since The Host is a deliriously goofy-serious tale of a comically inept young man who happens to be the world's biggest mama's boy. Said mother, on the other hand, is exactly what you need when you're in prison on a frame-up murder charge. The bleak, violent humor is unlike any found in Western films; naturally, the best points of comparison for this mix of slapstick, gore, ribaldry and sublimeness is the work of such Asian masters as Takeshi Kitano and even Takashi Miike. Kim Hye-ja is unforgettable in the title role.
