VIRGINIA BOYD
THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—Don't judge a book by its cover—but pick up Durham author Virginia Boyd's One Fell Swoop if only for its creative packaging. The book, a humorous and poignant take on a murder-suicide in a small town, and Boyd will be on hand tonight at 7 p.m. for a reading and signing. For more info, go to www.regbook.com. —Karlie Justus

BLITZEN TRAPPER
LOCAL 506—This year's best genre-hopping, gleefully derivative record, Blitzen Trapper's Wild Mountain Nation jumps from Pavement fuzz and stunted prog to Grateful Dead wistfulness and Grandaddy odyssey in 13 tightly wound tracks. It's a potpourri, but the Portland quintet maintains an exuberance that's as inviting as it is invigorating. With Blitzen Trapper, big guitars, whimsical lyrics and vinyl nostalgia feel renewed. Songs for Moms opens at 9 p.m., and Two Gallants headlines. Bring $8. —Grayson Currin
