BISHOP ALLEN
LOCAL 506—One of the savviest pop albums of the year, Bishop Allen's The Broken String collects standout tracks from the Brooklyn band's EPs and singles, re-recording the gems and uniting them. Bishop Allen's always been charming in a sort of clumsy, haphazard way, but The Broken String applies a smart, interactive veneer to Justin Rice and Christian Rudder's descriptive pop songs. Alternately huge and exuberant or subtle and careful, the production on The Broken String bows to the songs' strengths, using toy pianos, trumpets, broken reeds, strings and crystal-clear guitars to make Bisop Allen all the more attractive. Drawing off drafts from classicists like Paul Simon ("The Chinatown Bus" winks at "The Graduate"), Neil Diamond and Joe Jackson, Bishop Allen has good things ahead. The Teeth and Page France are pleasant appetizers, starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10. —Grayson Currin
