CAMERON VILLAGE REGIONAL LIBRARY—Author Tony Powell will speak on the topic of black leadership in America, a subject he covers in his book, North Carolina: Race of the Century. The book looks at the 1990 senatorial race between incumbent Jesse Helms and former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, who was the first African-American student admitted to Clemson. Powell analyzes racial trends in campaign advertisements that ultimately lead to a Helms re-election, despite Gantt's focus on issue-specific strategies. Although the book focuses on the 1990 race, Powell's research spans 300 years of political and media development. This free talk begins at 6:30 p.m.—Alex Henderson
