Carrboro
Sharon Gannon
Carrboro Yoga Center—India is the birthplace of a couple of ancient traditions that are increasingly popular (or, Ganesh forbid, trendy) in the West: yoga and vegetarianism. In her new book, aptly titled Yoga and Vegetarianism, Sharon Gannon patiently makes the case that yoga, as practiced in its fully spiritual dimension, calls for abstaining from meat-eating as an expression of the classical yogic concept of ahimsa: "Do no harm."

Gannon sees animal advocacy as of a piece with her teaching. In the early 1980s, she co-founded the Jivamukti yoga center in New York, and it quickly became one of the more popular studios in the country, counting a raft of celebrities among its loyalists (including rap impresario Russell Simmons, who wrote an endorsement on the book's back cover). She'll drop in at the Carrboro Yoga Center to teach a master class at 6:30 p.m. (go to mycyco.com/workshops for information on reserving mat space). She'll sign copies of her book for the public at 8:30 p.m. —Marc Maximov
