Anti-Pop Consortium

Local 506What a difference a breakup makes: Back when Anti-Pop Consortium called it quits in early 2003, underground rap music was mostly the domain of music nerds, or "backpackers," or dudes with more grievances than gumption. Since, though, a slew of rappers and producers and mashup masters—from legitimate stars M.I.A, Diplo and Girl Talk to those still closer to the fringes, like Aesop Rock, RJD2 and Sage Francis—have blurred the line between electronic dance music and hip-hop, between underground and mainstream attention. This is the world where hip-hopsters exist. A reconvened Anti-Pop Consortium got the memo when recording their latest album, Fluorescent Black.

With beats that seem hacked from an '80s video game, it feels like MCs High Priest and Beans are rapping from the middle of your local arcade, or from the pop culture epicenter. It works: Beans' signature fast-flowing style is more relentless than the ghosts from Pac-Man, the crossfire of electronic pulses defy you to do anything but move your ass to the rock club's (dance) floor. The 9:30 p.m. show costs $10 in advance, $12 at the door. See —Whitney Ayres
