Miranda Sings

When: Fri., Jan. 16, 7 p.m. 2015

In 2008, comedian Colleen Ballinger constructed the online persona “Miranda Sings” to lampoon under-talented and overconfident singers who deliver pop covers on YouTube. Miranda went, and has remained, viral, with her recent 90-second rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” generating nearly 12 million YouTube views. The watches have translated into hard tickets for Ballinger’s touring variety show. But what about Miranda, a character whose low intellect, gauche dress and appropriated language make Ballinger seem like a classist and ageist who’s only comfortable delivering her real views in disguise? The whole affair carries more than a whiff of uncomfortable low-class condemnation, with the underlying message that real entertainment should be reserved only for the brazen and the beautiful. Miranda Sings isn’t about us laughing at ourselves so much as it’s about “them” laughing at “you.” —Grayson Haver Currin
