Mike Tyson

When: Tue., April 23, 8 p.m. 2013

Mike Tyson is such a strange, unsettling figure in popular culture, projecting equal parts terrifying violence and childlike confusion. Lately, his presence has been used to odd effect, from his goofy, singing role as himself in The Hangover films to an acting gig as a convict on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit that earned massive blowback for a convicted rapist appearing on a show about sex crimes. The documentary Tyson, where he tells his story in his own words, is a riveting portrait of a man almost programmed to be a creature of rage, capable of both touching self-reflection and such chilling moments as recalling "that wretched swine of a woman" he was convicted of raping. Tyson's openly claimed that his stage show, directed by Spike Lee, is even more honest than the documentary, though reactions have been mixed: The Los Angeles Times called it "a knockout;" SFGate called it "like watching a flounder go 10 rounds in a boxing ring." We can't say what the experience of this show will be like, but it definitely won't be The Hangover Part III. —Zack Smith
