Mike Lupica

When: Tue., Sept. 27, 7 p.m. 2011

Despite knowing nothing about sports, I am aware of the power of a good underdog story, especially for kids. That means Mike Lupica's kids' book about small-town football, The Underdogs, is just what a young audience needs, with its tale of a school that's too poor for uniforms or players, and a young man desperate to keep the season from being canceled. It's a stirring tale of what happens when a town comes together to succeed, though I should mention, in fairness to this fictional school, that glee clubs and creative writing groups are far less expensive than sports and could use more respect ... what? Lupica appears at 7 p.m., and we suspect that while this is for a children's book, there will be many parents who will want to meet the author as well. —Zack Smith
