Midtown Dickens, Kid Future

When: Thu., July 22, 10 p.m. 2010

Aside from the space they share on this bill, very little unites Raleigh's Kid Future and Durham's Midtown Dickens. The three-dude Kid Future is an upstart in the most absolute sense, having played about a dozen shows and released only a handful of rough recordings online. Those tunes are keyboard-and-guitar gestalts, given to verses and hooks that look to serve the mood, not themselves. Think The National in the basement with drum machines and synths. Led by Catherine Edgerton and Kym Register, however, Midtown Dickens have appealed unabashedly to empathy across their two LPs. With bowed saw, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin and voices that crack and giggle in all the right places, their sense of cool comes without disaffection but rather as songs that feel like hugs and punch lines. —Grayson Currin
