Michael Rose, Sister Carol

When: Sat., April 20, 11 p.m. 2013

Former Black Uhuru frontman Michael Rose has one of the most distinctive and attractive voices in reggae. His baritone radiates warmth, while his smooth lyrical cadence carries an imperturbable panache similar to that of Snoop Dogg. Across his 35-year career, the Jamaican singer has worked with every notable indigenous producer, from Sly & Robbie to Dennis Brown. Time has skipped him over, judging from last year's Reggae Legend: From the inventive instrumentation to the mesmerizing melodies, it's a start-to-finish gem. Jamaican-born, American-based opener Sister Carol offers a soulful, Earth mother counterpoint. —Chris Parker
