Merge 25K

When: Sat., March 22, 5:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 2014

During the last quarter century, Merge Records has issued about 500 titles, from the mostly local singles of its salad days in Chapel Hill to the Billboard toppers of recent years spent as land barons in downtown Durham. All told, that's more than 298 hours of music, or enough to soundtrack 85.4 consecutive, eight-minute-mile marathons without repeating a single song. But you won't have to run that far today: Merge's inaugural 25K begins near Chapel Hill's Weaver Dairy Road and winds along the edge of the Johnston Mill Nature Preserve before making a hard eastbound turn toward Durham, where the race will end just blocks from Merge's current offices. As the 15.5-mile road race ends, the entertainment begins inside Motorco Music Hall: Durham's Bouncing Bulldogs, last year's World Jump Rope champions, perform at 10:45 a.m., followed by Girls Rock NC alumnae Cosmic Punk. After noon, two Merge acts—one very new and one batch of familiar locals—play. Vertical Scratchers is a spry new duo of indie rock veterans from California; they sound like The Lilys in their simpler phase and Of Montreal before they tweaked on electronics and eyeliner. Though known for songs about nocturnal dalliances, The Love Language ends the festivities with an early afternoon set. Merge co-founder Mac McCaughan will DJ, too. The post-run activities are gratis, but it'll cost you $85 to join the 800 registered racers. —Grayson Haver Currin
