Reverb is like the AutoTune of indie rock. Not to hate, because some—like Ontario's Memoryhouse —use it well. On The Years EP, the effect establishes a soft-focus drowse. Basic drum machine beats that are really little more than metronome ticks give some shape to blurry keys and vocals. It's a cool aesthetic, at least when applied to strong songs. Raleigh's Nests are just as reverb-drenched, but this folk revival-inspired Americana band uses it to accentuate acoustic guitar clangs and other sharp edges. A cover of Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene" paints the act as enamored of a certain shambling, Lomax lo-fi aesthetic. Greensboro's Jenny Besetzt could be an '80s-night house band. —Corbie Hill
