Mayhem Festival with Disturbed, Godsmack, Megadeth, Machine Head, In Flames, Trivium

When: Wed., Aug. 3, 2:15 p.m. 2011

Five of the six main attractions at this heavy metal traveling circus peaked more than a decade ago. The relative rookies in Trivium formed in 2000, meaning the band's modern rock-infused thrash is younger than the has-been stink emanating from its tourmates. Disturbed shot to the fore of the nu-metal pack with its 2000 debut, but they have yet to recover from The Sickness. After hits such as "Voodoo" hit the airwaves at the millennium, Godsmack soldiered along by scoring recruitment commercials for the armed services. In Flames put out a steady stream of releases, though their landmark remains, sadly, 1995's The Jester Race. Machine Head hasn't even dropped an album since 2007's The Blackening. And Megadeth counts as a heritage act. But even as the band's pinnacle achievement, 1986's Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying?, turns 25, Dave Mustaine's thrash totem is the festival's highlight by a mile. The music starts at 2:15 p.m. —Bryan C. Reed

Price: $25-68.50
