May the Road Rise to Meet You

When: Aug. 30-Oct. 20 2013

The idea of the flâneur—a wanderer of means, free to observe the everyday world from a critical distance—probably came from the traveling merchant. Pushing wares from port to port or highway exit to highway exit, the traveling salesman has become both a bane and a cross-cultural witness in the public imagination. Photographer Sara Macel plays upon this trope with her pseudo-documentary and biography May the Road Rise to Meet You, published by Daylight Books. Macel makes a visual narrative of her father's life on the road as a traveling salesman, capturing the changing nature of the American road in a digital age. By turns lonely, weird and touching, Macel's images form both a family photo album and a haunting American document. Meet her at this book launch event. —Chris Vitiello
