"The majority of student musicians start out playing rock 'n' roll," says Matt Vooris, drummer for Raleigh rock band A Rooster for the Masses and an area drum instructor since 2006. "I haven't yet seen a jazz band in a video game." This week Vooris bucks the trend, teaching five local grade school students how to play in a jazz combo. The resulting ensemble performs tonight at The Cave.
Started last summer, the Matt Vooris Music Camps teach entry-level music to kids between 7 and 17. So far this summer, Vooris has led three weeklong programs, two focused only on drumming and one on playing in a rock band.
Tonight's concert, which will feature drums, piano, guitar, trumpet, violin and possibly oboe, will be the first show for all five campers, but Vooris isn't worried. He's always impressed with his students' performances: "For some reason, every single camper just steps it up a notch for the performance." The show starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the $5 cover will help fund next year's camps. —Jordan Lawrence
