One of last year's most bittersweet musical evenings was an early June memorial show at Haw River Ballroom celebrating the life and music of drummer Matt Brown a few weeks after he died of a heart attack at age 42. More than a dozen bands that Brown had played with at one point or another gathered in Saxapahaw to pay tribute to Brown's enduring good grace and spirit, and to raise money for his wife and two daughters.
Sad as the occasion was, it helped Brown's friends to remember and honor him, enough so that many of the same acts are banding together again a year later, this time at Durham's showcase rock room. Performers include Baron Von Rumblebuss, John Howie Jr., Stratocruiser, Pagan Hellcats and Randy Dean Whitt. A very special addition to the lineup, in the opening slot, is Matt's daughter Ella, joined by local musician Jeff Hart and his band. Once again, all proceeds benefit the Brown family. —Peter Blackstock
