Martha Redbone Roots Project

When: Sat., Nov. 2, 5 & 8 p.m. 2013

When Martha Redbone emerged with Home of the Brave in 2001, she was a big-voiced retro-soul singer. Just three years later, on Skintalk, there was a vaguely generic, Macy Gray-like quality to her approach, further diminished by production that felt like makeup. But now she's returned as Martha Redbone Roots Project, working a mix of gospel-roots, Piedmont blues and Appalachian folk into The Garden of Love. The album's written around the poetry of William Blake. Redbone sounds even better voicing Blake's evocative lyricism, and the unabashed poesy is backed well by austere Americana. —Chris Parker
