Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing

When: Sat., March 26, 8 p.m. 2011

With almost three dozen albums under his belt and a couple of Grammy awards along the way, Mark O'Connor has become one of the best-known fiddle players in the world. Classical, jazz, folk: He does it all exquisitely. With Hot Swing, O'Connor emphasizes his roots as a jazz fiddler. O'Connor learned how to play jazz violin as a teenager 30 years ago under Stéphane Grappelli, who founded Quintette du Hot Club de France with Django Reinhardt in the 1930s, pioneering acoustic gypsy jazz. It's lighthearted, chugging music with blazingly fast runs, and it suits O'Connor's virtuosity well. Along with two guitarists and a bassist, O'Connor picks up the mantle of French jazz in a tribute to his mentor. —Andrew Ritchey
