Margaret Wrinkle

When: Wed., Feb. 20, 7 p.m. 2013

Author, artist and filmmaker Margaret Wrinkle, director of the award-winning documentary broken/ground, provides a disturbing look at slavery and power in her novel Wash. Set in 1800s Tennessee, it's about a disturbed Revolutionary War veteran who seeks to find his way out of financial and other troubles by setting a slave named Washington, the first in his family born into slavery, to work as a breeding sire, a dehumanizing task levied only by his spiritual link to his mother's African heritage. Wrinkle will read from and sign copies of Wash starting at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
