Marco Benevento, The Infamous Sugar

When: Fri., Nov. 14, 9 p.m. 2014

During the last two decades, Marco Benevento has become a respected and essential pianist in both serious jazz and loose jam scenes. He’s got chops that suggest intense studies of Monk and Bill Evans, while he’s got the wide musical palette of someone who loves the liberated means of psychedelic rock and experimental electronica. But even when he was part of the instrumental Benevento-Russo Duo, it was clear that there was always an important pop accessibility to his work. That’s emerged piecemeal on his solo records, and it finally blooms on this year’s Swift, a quixotic nine-song set produced by indie rock auteur and Shins member Richard Swift. Benevento not only sings, but he puts his voice in situations that suggest full-club sing-alongs and late-night anthems. Is it transitional? Sure, but in retrospect, Benevento’s career has been nothing if not a steady state of flux. —Grayson Haver Currin
