My wife and I met in the summer of 2004 at Carolina Beach, and we hit it off almost instantly. She was from Greece, temporarily in America visiting her cousin who I worked with. I knew I really liked her almost immediately because, when we first went out, she rebuffed my attempt to open the car door for her (I like an independent woman and that she is). We dated for 6 weeks before her tourist visa expired and she had to go back to Greece to finish college. I quit my job shortly thereafter and followed her to Greece, staying until I ran out of money and had to come back home (only like six weeks).

We did the long distance thing for a few months after that, but eventually we gave it up. There was really no practical way for us to be together, short of getting married, and at 23, we just weren’t ready for that. So after we broke up I never thought I’d see her again, but one night, almost five years after going our separate ways, I drunkenly facebooked her. Once again, sparks immediately flew. Three months later we were back together in America. A few months later in June 2010, we got married, and now there’s no more worrying about her visa expiring. — Marc Hulbert and Christina Kopitopoulou — Raleigh
