Maple Stave, Ghastly City Sleep

When: Tue., Nov. 2, 9:30 p.m. 2010

Everywhere Ghastly City Sleep gets mentioned, a nod to Radiohead soon follows, which makes sense. The Brooklyn band uses gradual, atmospheric builds and rides mid-tempo motorik percussion la, well, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway. The vocals alternate jarringly between gruff Modest Mouse-isms and a Thom Yorke-like ringing counter-tenor. Meanwhile, our own Maple Stave focuses on prog-math snap with raw post-punk vocals, like a more economical Minus the Bear. Yet there's an unusual symmetry in its dual baritone guitar lines. —Corbie Hill
