Maleficent | Indy Week

Rated PG 97 min. 2014

One of the very few movies where 3D really makes a difference, Disney's visually lush film stars Angelina Jolie in the story of Sleeping Beauty, as told from the wicked witch's point of view. The digital effects are graceful and artistic in the manner of classic Disney animation, but with the power and pop of high technology. Even Jolie gets digitally painted with impossible horns and razor-sharp cheekbones. The story, meanwhile, is engaging, folk-tale sturdy, and even a little subversive—there's some healthy mythology for tween girls in here. Jolie is mesmerizing and Sharlto Copley provides a strong villain. Bring the kids if you've got 'em, or borrow some if you don't.
