Maile Meloy

When: Tue., Oct. 1, 7 p.m. 2013

Maile Meloy is, quite frankly, an overachiever. She's a 2004 Guggenheim fellow, a recipient of the PEN/Malamud Award, a regular contributor to The New York Times in addition to being published in the Paris Review and The New Yorker, and oh yes, winner of the E.B. White Best Read-Aloud Novel Award for her young adult novel The Apothecary, a period piece involving everything from magical books to nuclear secrets. Her new sequel to that book, The Apprentices, delivers still more action involving jungle wars, magical communication methods and Cold War drama. No one should have all that talent! Of note is that her brother Colin Meloy is not only the lead guy for massively popular band The Decemberists but also is a best-selling children's author in his own right with his Wildwood series. What the jive is up with that family? Ask Meloy herself at this reading. —Zack Smith
