Made to Break

When: Fri., April 25, 9 p.m. 2014

The Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark seems to form new projects as often as most people change clothes, but every one of his moves has its purpose. The point with his newest, the electro-acoustic quartet Made To Break, is to dodge jazz conventions through "modular organization"—a malleable approach to composition and improvisation, wherein "the paths between the written components are never permanent." To date, their released material still sounds like jazz, but unpredictable moments emerge often, especially from Austrian electronics-wrangler Christof Kurzmann. And because the songs change from show to show, Made to Break really do get to change their musical clothes daily. —Marc Masters
