Mad Men

When: Sun., July 25, 10 p.m. 2010

Trianglewide — television near you — Yes, Don Draper and his gang of souses are back. It's a cause for celebration, to be sure, but after three seasons that saw the show become a pop culture sensation, one senses that the show's creators felt—along with a small but noisy group of naysayers—that the series was on the verge of overexposure (Mad Men Barbie dolls, anyone?). We're not anywhere near the shark-infested waters, but Don and Betty's marital troubles last season were excruciating—as was his lame affair with the schoolteacher. Fortunately, Season 3 rallied in its final episodes as Don left Sterling Cooper to found a new ad agency, along with, essentially, the show's best characters (Hellooo, Joan!). The finale was a welcome indication that the show may return to its strengths: brutal office and sexual gamesmanship, and the evolution of American consumer, media and moral culture. Season 4 begins tonight on AMC at 10 p.m. Pop the cork and party like it's 1964. —David Fellerath
