The Saturday Night Live
skit is stretched to its limits in this farcical send-up of '80s action movies where blue eyeshadow and Toto's "Rosanna" get equal amounts of screen time with rogue evildoers and our dimwitted hero, MacGruber. Will Forte's bumbling MacGruber works on the small screen but doesn't survive the enlargement to feature size. However, Forte salvages certain scenes, as when MacGruber makes love to the ghost of his dead wife (Maya Rudolph) against a gravestone with his pitch-perfect send up of Stallone, Norris and Lundgren. Other major players are SNL's Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe and Val Kilmer. Filmmakers John Solomon and Jorma Taccone claim this to be a valentine to action films, but MacGruber really reads like a worn-out dirty joke.
