Lydia Netzer's debut novel Shine Shine Shine, a critical favorite last year, is now out in paperback. It's the offbeat, poetic tale of a scientist who lives in space in a NASA capsule, where he's building a new civilization of self-replicating robots to populate the moon. Meanwhile, his alopecic wife on Earth is about to give birth to their second child. Their first child has autism; the scientist has a similar condition. He relies on precise code to understand human expressions and emotions, and that helps him program these robots. Though the characters are decidedly left-of-center, the book has earned widespread acclaim for its look at how we all struggle to understand the human condition—and how the struggle connects us all. —Zack Smith
