Luciano, Ikronik

When: Tue., July 23, 9 p.m. 2013

In an era of X-rated digital dancehall, Luciano still performs roots reggae based on traditional Rastafarian values. His even baritone soothes and apocalyptically warns in equal measure: "Right now we are at a point of rivalry and all matter of evil in the world, and my duty as a messenger is to run the music out there like the River Jordan," his bio reads. Born Jepther McClymont in Davey Town, Jamaica, the prolific 48-year-old adopted the name Luciano for his first album in the 1990s. On 2006's Child of a King, puts his own spiritual spin on Nina Simone and Cat Stevens; his latest, Rub-a-Dub Market, on the German Irievibrations label, preaches brimstone to Babylon against sonorous, rootsy beats. His Jamaican tour companions i-Kronik back him and also open the show. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
