Love and Other Drugs

Rated R 113 min. 2010

Director Edward Zwick's curious comedy set in the oh-so-idyllic era of the late '90s, where software millionaires and pharmaceutical companies threw money and sex at the feet of eager young sales reps. Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal), an underachiever trying to make his own luck pimping drugs to doctors, finds his focus shifting to romance when he meets-cute with artist Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway) when she bares her Parkinson's and her breasts at a doctor's visit where Jamie plays intern. What follows is a sexy bedroom comedy that, despite efforts at sweetening, remains a bitter pill. The plot gets a minor lift from Jamie's comic rise to fame as Pfizer's top Viagra rep but crashes post-high when the story returns to the theme of coping with terminal illness, using sentimentality as a salve for an incongruous plot. Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are likeable enough, but they can't resolve this film's tug of war between frivolity and gravity.
