Lonnie Walker, Dinosaur Feathers, The Charming Youngsters (Back Room)

When: Thu., Sept. 25, 9 p.m. 2014

One of my favorite sets at Hopscotch 2014 came unexpectedly but not without anticipation. After a string of setbacks and momentum roadblocks, Raleigh’s occasionally brilliant Lonnie Walker was prepared to step back into the spotlight, opening for St. Vincent and Spoon at the festival’s true headlining gig. But would the old gusto and élan of the once-livewire act remain? It did. Frontman Brian Corum has grown into his stream-of-sudden-insights lyrics, tempering them with moments of thoughtful reserve and anchoring them with some of his biggest hooks to date. Released in a limited edition of 50 at Hopscotch, their new album, Earth Canals, still seeks proper release—or, better yet, a chance to show that awaiting Lonnie Walker’s return was just maybe worth it. —Grayson Haver Currin
