Lloyd Cole Small Ensemble

When: Fri., June 17, 8 p.m. 2011

For the past 25 years, Lloyd Cole has done what most musicians would love to do: make a living writing and performing music. He's never been fashionable, though some of his music (thanks to the "state-of-the-art" new-wavey sound on his earlier albums with the Commotions) is definitely an artifact of its time. He's had his share of critical acclaim, but calling him a critic's darling might go a step too far. Cole has achieved modest success, including a string of charting singles in the U.K. and a spot on a Tori Amos covers album, but nothing spectacular. He's simply spent the past three decades writing pleasant, literate songs for a small yet passionate fanbase. But the Lloyd Cole Small Ensemble—which features Cole and friends acoustically exploring his discography—isn't just for the converted. Freed from the spotty production flourishes that have marred some of his albums, the modest wit and generous warmth nestled within his songs shine through. It's the perfect showcase for Cole's repertoire, and a wonderful way for strangers to acquaint themselves with his worthy body of work.—David Raposa
