Little Utopia & Other Dances | Meredith College: Jones Auditorium | Stage | Indy Week

Little Utopia & Other Dances

When: Sat., Jan. 7, 8 p.m. and Sun., Jan. 8, 3 p.m. 2012

Carol Kyles Finley's witty, acerbic and critical stage works fuse dance with theater in their examinations of gender and domestic dilemmas. In works including Kitchen Stories, Fantasia on Break-Ups and Settling, Finley choreographs for dancers—and trashcans, suitcases, kitchen carts and other unlikely stage partners. This decade retrospective of her work has been a year in the making and features a company of 10 present and former Meredith dance students in four repertory works and two new pieces: the title work and a tap number—of all things—called Prelude to Settling. Rounding out the evening are dance and video works from choreographers Susan Haines and Talani Torres, who collaborated with Finley on an evening at Brooklyn's Center for Performance Research in August. Saturday's 8 p.m. show is followed by a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets run $5–$10; it's free for Meredith students, staff and faculty. —Byron Woods
