Lincoln

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, NCMA presents Steven Spielberg's latest epic, last year's sweeping historical drama that unsurprisingly, and deservedly, won Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for his portrayal of the 16th president. Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner brings both the passion and the talkiness of theater to this screenplay, which tells of the last four months of Lincoln's life and his battle to push the 13th Amendment through the House of Representatives. Here, we learn, the ends justify the means, as this long-winded Lincoln occasionally eschews ethics and relies on manipulation to get things done. Sounds like, well, politics as usual, but with more horses and higher stakes. Go see this, then follow it up with a home viewing of Django Unchained for the ultimate contrast in emancipation-themed cinema. —Emma D. Miller
