Lila, io, The Droogies

When: Fri., Dec. 26, 9 p.m. 2014

Durham’s LiLa can be a lot of fun. With brazen beats that skitter and jostle through a china shop of world music and jazz melodies, these players glean substantial energy from fusing styles at odd angles. It’s charming. Sure, the heavy-handed lyrics don’t always possess the gravitas needed to make the points stick, but LiLa’s sound is so kinetic that the impediment never keeps them from a good time. io, a long-defunct band featuring I Was Totally Destroying It’s John Booker, reunites for one night to reignite the jarring and cerebral end of alternative rock. It’s like Linkin Park when they finally realized that rap wasn’t their strong suit, but rinsed in Rivers Cuomo love. With The Droogies, another expired area band getting back together for this flash. —Jordan Lawrence
