Leyla McCalla Duo, Justin Robinson, Michaela Anne

When: Sun., Nov. 16, 9 p.m. 2014

As the Carolina Chocolate Drops continue to become more of an artistic institution than a steady band, listeners get more chances to enjoy the metastasis of its former or present members. Current Drop Rhiannon Giddens is working on a solo album, for instance, while ex-Drops Justin Robinson and Dom Flemons have launched more modest individual efforts of their own. The classically trained Leyla McCalla spent time playing cello in the band, but her solo debut, Vari-Colored Songs, is one of the most intriguing efforts to come from that collective camp. Featuring originals, reworkings of Langston Hughes poems and traditional Haitian updates, Vari-Colored Songs radiates with folk-music warmth, as though McCalla lives to share these tales—fitting, as she was discovered by Music Maker’s Tim Duffy while she worked as a street musician in New Orleans. Robinson opens, as does singer-songwriter Michaela Anne. —Grayson Haver Currin
