When: Fri., Dec. 20, 6 p.m. 2013

Some artists make private work "for the drawer." For years, Durham musician Letha Rodman Melchior—who has a new record out—has been making collages and putting them under her bed. Melchior has melanoma and breast cancer, but that's not stopping her from appearing at Supergraphic tonight. She and her husband, Dan, will play music, and there will be a exhibition of her collages, which also will be for sale.

There's a tradition of collagist musicians who direct the organizing impulse behind musical instrumentation and arrangement into combining discrete visual elements toward a distinct, integrated whole. Melchior's images show hints of Joseph Cornell's vocabulary and Jess' density, filtered through a wry sense of humor. —Chris Vitiello
