Lee Smith

When: Fri., June 10, 7 p.m. 2011

Hillsborough-based author Lee Smith contains multitudes. But what's wonderful about the characters in her book of short stories Mrs. Darcy and The Blue-Eyed Stranger (Algonquin Books) is that so many of them are us. Wives, mothers, precocious children—Smith's observational detail and interiority nonetheless avoid tearing them out of the real time of their stories. Never predatory, Smith subtly steps out of the way of the occupants of these stories, placing their humanity in front of her prose. The recipient of a 1999 award for literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Smith has also been honored with the North Carolina Award for Literature and a Literary Lifetime Achievement Award from the State Library of Virginia. She celebrates the paperback release of Mrs. Darcy with appearances at 7 p.m. Friday at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham and 2 p.m. Saturday at McIntyre's Books at Fearrington Village. —Chris Vitiello
