Lee Smith: Guests on Earth

Nationally renowned author with numerous awards-- and Hillsborough resident--Lee Smith will discuss her newest novel, Guests on Earth, set at the Highland mental hospital in Asheville between 1936 and 1948. The author tells her story though the coming-of-age experiences of a child who arrives at Highland at age 13. The title of the novel comes from an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: “The insane are always mere guests on earth, eternal strangers carrying around broken decalogues that they cannot read.” Sponsored by Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library
