Lee Fields & the Expressions, Lady

When: Thu., April 11, 8 p.m. 2013

From the dance moves to the yelps, down to his looks, Lee Fields arrived as an acolyte of James Brown. He even earned the nickname "Little J.B." But disco killed Fields' career, which lay dormant until the '90s. His big break was hooking up with the Brooklyn funk aficionados at Desco Records, who had great sympathy for his work. Sharon Jones sang backup for him, but her own ascension ultimately overshadowed his. He ended a seven-year hiatus with 2009's powerful My World and followed last year with the terrific Faithful Man. Those records shed the JB-isms to explore a wider array of soul styles and showcase Fields' mastery and versatility. —Chris Parker
