Leaves' Eyes, Blackguard, Cynonyte

When: Sun., Sept. 12, 8 p.m. 2010

Symphonic metal is a weird and difficult discipline. Headliner Leaves' Eyes, with willowy lead singer Liv Kristine, foments a delicate approach, as if they were '70s prog-folksters Pentangle with a single strand of chest hair. As the metaphor suggests, there's simply not enough testosterone to float the medieval-baroque elements. Blackguard is significantly more effective. Singer Paul Zinay's death metal growl counterbalances the band's arty, classical undulations, and it's all atop a roiling undercurrent of churning bass and fervent drums. Synths surf over the top, along with flutes and prog-folk guitars, without completely forsaking the breakdowns. The result is elegant brutality. —Chris Parker
