Lauryn Hill

When: Sun., July 20, 7 p.m. 2014

"Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion," Kanye West offered in a 2007 song. "I wish her heart still was in rhymin'." That West verse arrived almost a decade after the Fugees' former leading lady released her soul masterpiece, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, an album that would not only net her a record-setting five Grammys but also stand as one of an entire generation's unanimous landmarks. But as the lyrics to "Mystery of Iniquity," from Hill's 2001 acoustic MTV Unplugged 2.0, suggest, it all fell down. She became a social recluse and took increasing refuge in extreme spiritual and political ideology. Her return to stages was rough at the start, but she now celebrates each show as though Miseducation were released just last year. Is it only nostalgia if you can't have it anymore? Luckily, we get more of the multi-talented Hill, this time in our region's backyard amphitheater. —Eric Tullis
