MIKE HOYT: LASTING IMPRESSIONS OPENING RECEPTION

FRIDAY, OCT. 31, HILLSBOROUGH

ENO GALLERY—North Carolina artist Mike Hoyt, who has been painting for more than 40 years, calls himself a Southern Impressionist. This means he infuses the blurry color-drunk vision of French masters with a Southeastern American terroir, striving to "portray the temporal effects of light and color." Mundane subjects and vantages are rendered with the immersive splendor of majestic landscapes. In "Bling," one of the new oil paintings in Lasting Impressions (up through Nov. 23), an Airstream trailer becomes an oily mirror for the yellow and green grasses surrounding it, the blue sky above and the mountain range in the distance, only seen in the reflection, as though it were behind the viewer's back. A consummately rural image becomes an insight into how the world can overfill things, making them seem bigger on the inside than the outside. 6–9 p.m., free, 100 S. Churton St., 919-883-1415, www.enogallery.net. —Brian Howe
