Director Lynn Shelton's film follows the increasingly implausible friendship between 20-something Megan (Keira Knightley) and 16-year-old student Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz). Megan is reacting with panic at the thought of growing up, spurred in part by her longtime boyfriend Anthony and her bridezilla bestie Allison. Shelton made a name for herself with loose, largely improvised alt-comedies such as Your Sister's Sister. Now she's working with a script by YA writer Andrea Seigel and this time around there's a pronounced—and unfortunate—concern for romantic comedy conventions. The film's focus scatters as the rom-com contrivances pile up. It's a bummer because the story raises some intriguingly uncomfortable questions about whether adulthood is worth all the effort.
