In youth, love vacillates between soaring highs and stinging lows. As one ages, it mellows to poles of warmth and ache. In spectacular circumstances, such as the class drama of Verdi's opera La traviata, love remains stinging and bittersweet. Set against the lights of 19th-century Paris, consumptive party girl Violetta falls for the earnest, young Alfredo and turns her back on her glamorous lifestyle. But succumbing to his father's pressure to preserve his family's honor, she abandons the heartbroken Alfredo, and sublime pain ensues. Soprano Jacqueline Echols returns to the North Carolina Opera to take the role of Violetta. Tenor Mario Chang, winner of Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition last year, plays the son who loves Violetta, while baritone Joo Won Kang becomes the father who forbids the romance. Timothy Myers conducts, while Marc Astafan directs this fully staged production—another big step for the NCO. 8 p.m. Friday & 3 p.m. Sunday, $25.43-$85.38, 2 E.
