Kooley High

When: Wed., July 7, 7 p.m. 2010

Welcome home, Kooley High: On the cusp of releasing its long-awaited debut LP (the ever-changing release date for Eastern Standard Time is now set for July 27), the Raleigh hip-hop crew returns to the Triangle, a month after most of its members made a temporary move to Brooklyn to continue their grassroots push for stardom. Missed released dates be damned, though, because there couldn't be a better time for a Kooley comeback. The laid-back, soul-sampling grooves of beatmakers Foolery and Sinopsis throw back to hip-hop's golden age, matching the playground spirit of Kooley's trio of charismatic emcees. In other words, they pump out perfect summertime jams, so this late-evening outdoor performance should be a perfect—and different—look for Duke's grand Music in the Garden series. The party starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10 ($5 for Duke students and employees, free for kids 12 and under). Kooley also performs a free set on Thursday at Tir Na Nog's Local Beer Local Band night; visit . —Spencer Griffith

Price: $10
