Kool A.D., Day Job

When: Fri., Oct. 18, 9 p.m. 2013

When Das Racist members Heems and Kool A.D. each released eccentric solo records, they effectively foreshadowed the dissolution of their laughing-though-very-serious rap duo. While Heems concocted noisy, personal joke rap, Kool A.D. put out a nutty dance record called The Palm Wine Drinkard, only to follow it up with a rubbery Bay Area-tinged rap album titled 51. Post-breakup, Kool A.D. remains unpredictable, equal parts virtuosic free-associative rapper and performance-art troll. Show up to see which side arrives. Word nerd Day Job, who mutates trap music into acid-damaged bump and finds a way to ponder "egalitarianism" in his raps, also performs. —Brandon Soderberg
