Kirill Gerstein

When: Sat., Nov. 9, 8 p.m. 2013

When I was in high school, a friend and I used to play, simultaneously, a symphonic recording of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and the Emerson, Lake & Palmer rock cover. The first time I heard the popular composition played as Mussorgsky originally composed it—for solo piano—was a jarring experience. The gifted pianist Kirill Gerstein plays the piece as part of a program that includes Haydn, Timo Andres and Schumann's delightful "Carnaval." Gerstein is up to such a challenging and various program; at 14, he was the youngest student in the history of the renowned Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. He received the $300,000 Gilmore Foundation Artist Award in 2010, something given to a classical pianist only once every four years. —Chris Vitiello
